BIGFOOT DIGITAL FOOTPRINT AT CAVAN & MONAGHAN SCIENCE FESTIVAL
BigFoot Digital Footprint will be showcasing their research using a psychometric app which analyzes users’ data awareness through Facebook. The app walks users through their perceived behavior and their actual behavior. One of the questions asks, “How often do you share friends’ posts?” With more than 200 respondents the answer has generated a 65% difference. This result tells researchers, 65% of the time, users aren’t aware of how often they share those posts. Another question asking about user behavior, “How often do you tag your own images of yourself?” On average, respondents are inaccurate 54% of the time.
“It is essential that digital citizens in our digitally empowered society are aware of their digital footprint,” says Dr. Kevin Koidl, Lead Researcher with BigFoot Digital Footprint through the ADAPT Centre. “We achieve this by reaching out to the public via the BigFoot initiative.”
Some of you may be wondering why digital awareness is of importance, well, fake news. Facebook has gained the reputation of offering a space to share fake news, primarily after the results of Brexit and the American 2016 elections. This inattention is problematic because users could be easily engaging with fake news content and not even know they’re doing it. The user becomes the direct cause of the problem just by acting as a vector for the content’s movement. Users don’t know they’re doing it because they are not paying attention or remembering their actions while using social media.
If you want to test your level of perception for actions taken on Facebook, the downloadable app is available through Google Play Store and iTunes. The expert researchers are continuously hosting presentations of the technology during public workshops and conferences, always free and open to the public. The next one in Dublin is scheduled through their MeetUp group, Social Media Identity, Tuesday 21st, November 7-8 pm, LaundPad in the Berkeley Library, TCD.
The Cavan & Monaghan Science Festival is a part of Science Week Ireland which is funded through Science Foundation Ireland. Initiatives aim to make science more interesting and accessible to everyone while highlighting science, technology, and engineering. Although BigFoot Digital Footprint will be a guest exhibitor on the 18th, Cavan & Monaghan Science Festival is scheduled to take place from 7th to the 23rd November.
